Orioles Update

Yesterday, was one of the Orioles best games of the season. Luckily, I was there to see a great game. Matt Wieters stole the show for the Orioles. Wieters had a huge home run in the 8th to bail out the pathetic Oriole offense. Well, they aren't pathetic, but they have been lately. That home run was a pretty impressive sight as the baseball was absolutely crushed. Not only that, but Wieters called a great game behind the plate. Additionally, he ended the game in impressive fashion. The game ended on a strike 'em out, throw 'em out. I have never seen a game end like that, so it was impressive for me.

The pitching was tremendous. Arrieta was awesome and only gave up one run in earning a quality start. Hopefully, Arrieta can duplicate his success in this start with all the rest of his starts. Pedro Strop went in for just 1/3 of an inning and managed to pick up the win. Strop is now (4-2) after the victory. The dude is dirty. After Strop comes Jim Johnson. The closer managed to pick up his 22nd save of the season. I'd take Johnson over any relief pitcher in baseball. All-Star.

Nolan Reimold underwent successful surgery today, so that is good. Reimold is a possibility to return this year, but it is very doubtful. Still, it is good news that there was no setback with the surgery.

Finally, Miguel Tejada asked for and was granted his release. No more worrying if Tejada will return to Baltimore.

Adam Jones Near Contract Extension

The Orioles are about to sign their best player long term. Center Fielder Adam Jones, who is a serious MVP candidate, is going to be a Oriole for a while. Put all of the rumors to bed, this guy is staying. Apparently the deal will be worth 85.5 million over 6 years. This contract will be the largest in Oriole history. This deal would lock up the 26 year old until he is 33. Jones will not have to go to arbitration now if the contract is signed and will delay his free agency 5 years.

The previous contract record belonged to Miguel Tejada. That deal was worth 72 million over 6 years.

Orioles Sign Tejada (Again) and Today's Lineup

If Miguel Tejada passes his physical on Monday he will head to extended spring training in Sarasota, FL. This will be the third time that Tejada will sign with the organization. His most notable stint started in 2003 and ended with him being traded for Matt Albers, Troy Patton, Luke Scott and more. Tejada's last stint ended in him being traded for Wynn Pelzer who was recently released. In 2004 Tejada hit .311 with 34 homers and 150 RBIs. That season was Tejada's best in Baltimore and perhaps his best as a pro. This move is just a depth move for the Orioles, but they are not satisfied with their infield defense. That defense has been worst at 3rd base where Mark Reynolds has been awful. I doubt he starts in Baltimore, but you never know, the Orioles sure do like the guy. I personally am not a fan of Tejada and his steroid usage, but whatever.

The Orioles lineup is pictured here. Flaherty leading off and playing in left is certainly the biggest change from the norm. Mark Reynolds is once again in at third base. Let's hope that he doesn't get hit too many balls and continues his recent hot streak with the bat. Let's also hope Johnson is getting hits because he may be the reason Tejada is rejoining the organization.
