NFC West Draft Grades

This is my last divisional draft recap. The NFC West which is currently the top division in football added a bit more talent.

Arizona Cardinals

Best Pick: Ed Stinson

Where he was picked, Stinson provides a great value as a 5 technique. Unlike others, I am not a big fan of Arizona's draft either so being one of two picks I liked helps Stinson.

Summary: The Cardinals got great value with Stinson in round 5 and with Martin in Round 3. However, I am not a fan of the rest of their draft at all. They reached on Brown who is small and doesn't run great routes. They picked Brown solely on speed in a loaded wide receiver class. They also reached hard on Logan Thomas who I just don't see it on. Notre Dame's history on tight ends makes me hopeful about Niklas, but he's very slow. He's a good blocking tight end which makes him a good day 3 selection, but I think 2nd round is a little high in this draft. Bucannon had good size and speed, but not sure about him as a first rounder. Didn't hate the draft, but it was below average for me.

Steen was one of only three good signings by Arizona. He will make the 53 man roster and likely be an eventual starter for the Cardinals. It was surprising that he lasted to free agency.
Corey Washington has fantastic kick return ability and is big and athletic. He is another free agent that will make the Cardinals out of camp and contribute this season.
Todd Washington is the 3rd signing. He will likely make an NFL roster or the 49ers practice squad. He has a lot of ability and tested well even with a toe injury. This guy has a lot of talent.

San Francisco 49ers

Best Pick: Marcus Martin

Another center selected that was the best pick for their team. I must be a fan of instant starters that can help their team out. That is exactly what Martin provides. He has the ability to instantly enter a lineup and produce. He is a powerful guy that is a great run blocker and great fit for San Francisco.

Summary: I don't like picking a runningback in the 2nd round, but who they got and how they play, it works for the 49ers. They reached in round 1 too, but other than those first two picks, this was a very average draft for the 49ers. Martin was the highlight of the draft for me.

Founoti is a solid tackle and I think he will stick somewhere. San Francisco doesn't need much help at tackle, but he could compete for a backup position and push somebody. If he doesn't cut it in San Francisco, look for Fonoti to latch on somewhere else. Miami would be a great fit for Fonoti.
McCray has kick returning ability and is said to be an asset on special teams. He went to the alma mater of the 49ers defensive line coach which is likely how they found him and got him signed. This guy will be very interesting to watch. Although the 49ers are deep at safety, I like his chances as a special teams player to start out.
Skov was projected by many as a 3rd round pick and ranked by many as the 3rd best inside linebacker in the entire draft. How he didn't get drafted blows my mind, but the 49ers smartly jumped all over signing him. This guy is a fantastic signing that provides instant depth at the position. While the 49ers have one of the best, if not the best linebacking corps in the country, Skov adds to the talent at the position. I still look for Skov to make the team despite the talent at linebacker in San Francisco. The additions of Borland and Skov certainly help out with the horrible injury to Novorro Bowman. One man's misery is another man's opportunity and the injury improves Skov's chances of making the team and an early impact.

Seattle Seahawks

Best Pick: Cassius Marsh

There are concerns for Marsh off the field which is one of the reasons he is a 4th rounder, but its worth a shot in the 4th round. Pete Carroll is not afraid to take a chance on a kid and he did it with Marsh. He is a good fit for them as a situational pass rusher and he doesn't have to play right away. If it works out great, if not no harm done. A decent risk to take in Round 4.

Summary: Seattle is used to having their drafts under Carroll questioned and this is another example. However, they seem to work out. I am one that hasn't questioned their drafts until now. I am among the haters this year because I just don't see contributors in this draft class. There is some potential with Norwood, Pierre-Louis, and Marsh in the middle rounds, but they reached more than once.

Jeffcoat has a great shot at making Seattle's roster and would have been a 4th round pick in most drafts. The depth of this draft really hurt Jeffcoat as did Texas' season. However, he is a good player. A little to slow for linebacker and a little too small for a traditional defensive end role, Jeffcoat is a tweener, but in Seattle he will be a situational pass rusher and will be a great fit for that. If he can add some speed or size, watch out.
McAllister didn't get much playing time this past year because FSU had Timmy Jernigan at nose and they also had Jaccobbi McDaniel. However, eventhough Jernigan was one of the best players in this draft, it doesn't mean McDaniel and McAllister are scrubs. All three can play pretty well. The Seahawks are going to love McAllister and he will provide some depth.

St. Louis Rams

Best Pick: Lamarcus Joyner

Joyner is the guy the Rams wanted in this draft. He fills a huge need by providing desperately needed secondary help. Most of all though the Rams wanted his playmaking ability and were not shying away because of his size. He is the 3^rd best Seminole in this draft (behind Benjamin and Jernigan) and the has a knack for the big play. He dominated Clemson and their star player Sammy Watkins. His two turnovers early turned that game into a rout quickly. Above, one of those plays is pictured. This guy just makes plays.

Summary: The Rams got three starters with their first three picks and added a guy that will contribute highly to their running game with their next selection. I wouldn’t be surprised if Alexander started by the end of the season either. 5 contributors for years to come is fantastic. All the other picks are just gravy on top if they pan out. I like EJ Gaines too. That guy could end up being another contributor down the road. Great draft for the Rams and the 3^rd best overall in my opinion. They were the 3^rd team to separate themselves from the group.

Bayer will push for a roster spot because there is nobody beyond the top three, but he is unlikely to win the 3rd tight end job.
Even as the Gator hater that I am, it is shocking that Roberson is available. I had him rated as a 5th rounder and CBS Sports had him rated as a 3rd rounder. Many mocks had Roberson being picked on Day 2, so to see him last all the way through day 3 is rather surprising. Solid move by the Rams to swoop him up.
The Rams didn't draft a wide receiver and have issues with Kenny Britt and Stedman Bailey making them need improved depth at wideout. Step in Austin Franklin who although undersized can run routes and has decent speed. Another great pickup. Sherman has better size and could also be a good fit, but is unproven against solid competition being from such a small school.
Avery Cunningham and Jarrid Bryant are unlikely to make the team, but they add desperately needed competition in the secondary.
Unless Lance Kendricks moves from tight end to fullback, expect Kadeem Jones to be lining up at fullback for St. Louis. He is the most likely besides Franklin to make the team and could easily start day 1.
It is shocking that McCray was not drafted out of Mississippi. The Rams have 4 capable tackles, but many reports have two of those tackles bumping down to guard to start. That move will leave St.Louis thin behind the starters and makes McCray a perfect fit as a backup tackle. This also gives Salimu a decent chance to make the team.

Best Pick: Jake Matthews

This guy was the safest pick in the entire draft. He has ability to play at a near all-pro level right now. He is the safest bet to be an All-Pro that I have seen in 5 years. His NFL bloodline is legendary. Dad in the Hall of Fame, uncle a pro-bowler, cousin a pro-bowler, other cousin in the NFL, brother a D1 athlete and future 1st rounder. This stuff is incredible. These guys are quite good and Jake may end up being the 2nd best behind dad. What a pick by Atlanta.

Summary: This draft had quality written all over it. The Falcons were weak on the lines on both sides of the ball and upgraded both sides with the 1^st two picks. Not to mention that they got a guy from THE NFL bloodline who was the safest pick in this draft. Matthews has NFL All-Pro written all over him. The top 7 picks will all compete for spots on the team and immediate playing time. Very quality draft from top to bottom and the little FSU RB will show flashes of WD. No complaints on the Falcons draft. It is near the top.

Matthews is just as good as several QBs that actually got drafted. He will compete for a roster spot and it won't be shocking if he is the #2 guy coming into the season. Great depth move. 

Jerome Smith is a good complement to Freeman and good replacement for Jason Snelling. He can pass block and catch. He doesn't have a lot of elusiveness, but he will get in there and get yardage.

I realize why they signed these wide receivers after the injuries caused serious problems last year, but this group is extremely unimpressive.

Brian Wozniak is a fantastic blocking tight end. He has hands of stone, but his ability in goal line packages will be very useful. If he can catch better, he will be much more useful. His teammate Pederson was the best signing of the group by far. Both the Wisconsin TEs should make this squad.

Glover-Wright also should make this squad. The Falcons got a lot younger and more talented through the draft and these signings.

Carolina Panthers

Best Pick: Kelvin Benjamin

I want to say that Trai Turner was the best pick and this was the hardest decision for me, but Benjamin has too much upside. Not only that, but Newton desperately needed a WR and Benjamin was the best guy available. This guy has a huge catch raidus and an even bigger ceiling. After only playing football for 3 years prior to this past season, Benjamin made a major impact for the National Champions. This guy is an impact player from Day 1, that will keep getting better and better. I don't think Cam is complaining about a guy that can make plays like the one in the photo.

Summary: The Panthers had the 4th best draft. They were right below the top three of Baltimore, Houston, and a team yet to be revealed. They got 6 pretty great players and were very efficient with all of their picks. Their best move of the draft was staying put and not trading up like the Cowboys. The Cowboys even questioned themselves after they gave their picks to Washington because the Panthers got such great value. Dallas moved up and got someone worse than who the Panthers got at 60 in Ealy. The Panthers also got an immediate starter at guard in Trai Turner round 3. Staying put worked wonders for them. By staying put in Round 1, the Panthers got the guy with the most upside in the entire draft.

The Panthers are not incredibly deep at receiver or returner so Philly Brown has a solid chance of making this team.
Byndom regressed a bit the past few seasons at Texas, but he has talent. As a contributor on special teams and a potential guy down the road, he could make this team.
Lucas adds depth, flexibility, and most importantly size to the WR position. While he will likely be a 4th or 5th WR, Lucas's frame in the endzone will be force to be wreckoned with. Especially when you consider he will be paired with the monsters Kelvin Benjamin and Greg Olsen. This was a good signing.
Allen is undersized, but he is the best undrafted free agent signing in the division. This guy has it all except for size. He is a football player and he racked up 11 sacks last season. This guy is making this football team. Still not a guarantee to make the roster, but he is a good football player with tremendous heart. Give the little guy a chance.

New Orleans Saints

Best Pick: Ronald Powell

How does a linebacker from the arch-rival make the best pick for a team? Three reasons, honesty, plamaking ability, and an unspectacular draft from the team that picked him. Despite losing to Georgia Southern (who didn't throw a pass) and going 4-8, the Florida Gators had some talent on defense. The most talented player on that defense not returning to school is Ronald Powell. The Saints selected Powell in the 5th round where he provided great value. The linebacker ran the 4th fastest 40 time at his position showcasing his athleticism. He was the #1 DE in the country coming out of high school and then the terrible coaching at Florida helped him regress every season. Look at the tape and his production because I am not joking he regressed. However, injuries had a big part of that the last two years. That being said he is a terrific athlete with a high upside if he gets good coaching and stays healthy.

Summary: Eventhough he is a Gator, the Ronald Powell pick was fantastic at that point in the draft. The upside of picking Powell is tremendous. Unfortunately, that was the only above average selection for the Saints who just had average picks the rest of the way. I love Brandin Cooks and think he can be really good, but I hate how they got him. He is the 5th best receiver in this draft and they traded up to get him. They traded away extra picks to get a guy worse than the guy that Carolina got later in the draft. Again, showing why Carolina benefited from staying put. New Orleans did not benefit from giving up the extra picks.

Coleman is a willing blocker and has a lot of potential. This is the type of guy you look for after the draft. The Saints are thrilled to have landed him in this low-risk spot.
George Uko has a great chance to make this roster as a pass rusher and even make the defensive line rotation. Another solid signing.
Edebali is pretty inexperienced being from Germany, but he has great talent and potential. He should also have a good chance of making the roster and was a solid signing.
Zimmerman is good and versatile, but unlikely to contribute right away. He could provide depth if one of the top 2 guys gets hurt, but the Saints look to be fine at safety.
Warren is the most likely to get cut on this list. He is the least talented, playing at a position where the Saints have 2 All-Pro level players, and a worse football player than another undrafted FA in Zimmerman.
Kilgore has fantastic size and arm strength. He is the sleeper of this entire group of undrafted free agents.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Best Pick: Mike Evans

Mike Glennon could not be happier. They get the guy who I think is the best WR in this draft. The ultra-talented Mike Evans. This guy will be fantastic for Tampa and gives them one of the best WR tandems in the league. The tandem could prove to be better than all the others in a few years. Now, we really get to see what Glennon can do. Many scouts were saying that Evans made Manziel and I agree for the most part. If you watch the tape, Mike Evans is fantastic. Like Kelvin Benjamin, Mike Evans has only played 3 full years of football. This guy has limitless potential. Fantastic pick by the Bucs.

Summary: The Bucs hit a home run with Evans, but did nothing else exciting in the draft. The other players provide depth, but little more and every one was slightly overdrafted in my opinion. Although I am slightly intrigued by Sims who could add to this backfield. This team didn't blow any picks though completely and got guys who held some value. It was your typical above average draft when you factor in the future all-pro player joining the Bucs.

Patton ran a 4.3 40 and has pretty good hands. Don't hold it against him that he didn't have a QB capable of getting him the ball. He could be quite good in the pros.
Andrew Miller has played guard and center in the past and offers a great deal of versatility if he makes the team.
Many are shocked that Askew wasn't drafted. I am not as he wasn't very good on an awful defense. However, he holds some value as an undrafted free agent. He is a converted WR who only played one season of defense and is still learning defense. His ability to work in space could be an ideal fit for Lovie's Tampa 2 defense.
Some have reported Keith Lewis can run a 4.2 40. Although, a 40 yard time isn't indicative of pro success, it is definitely worth a shot as a cheap undrafted free agent.

Matt Patchan will make the team and stick in the NFL if, and its a big if, he can stay healthy. Patchan was so frequently injured that he had 6 years of eligibility.
It is hard to find explosive interior defensive lineman which gives Euclid Cummings a shot at a roster spot.
Chris Burnette is another guy that can make this squad and probably the last from the undrafted free agent group.

Chicago Bears

Best Pick: Brock Vereen

Brock Vereen is the younger brother of NFL runningback Shane. Not the best indicator of success, but seeing the NFL bloodlines does not hurt. Again, not a huge point of emphasis, but Vereen had the 2nd best time among all safeties in the 3 cone drill, the 20 yard shuttle, and the 40 yard dash. Additionally, Vereen did the most bench press reps among all safeties at the combine. All that tells you is that Vereen is strong and fast which is verified on tape. Watching the tape also shows you that he is one of the hardest hitting safeties in this draft. He won't be a starter right away and needs some work, but this is great value in Round 4. Vereen will be an impact player for the Bears down the road.

Summary: Eventhough the Bears signed Jay Ratliff in Free Agency they needed depth at defensive tackle. Ferguson provides that depth. Vereen and Carey were great value picks in the 4th round. Like I said, Vereen could start early and will eventually be an impact player. Kyle Fuller is a really good cover corner and the Bears didn't reach for anybody or have any truly bad selections. Nice job by Chicago.

I love the Dunn signing. He is another guy that provides depth and is a great guy to take a shot on as an undrafted free agent. Jordan Lynch of course was the Heisman finalist QB that the Bears are gonna try as a runningback. He has a very slim chance of making the roster. Ryan Groy is another guy that has a shot to make this roster.
The linebackers will all have a shot to make the roster. Most likely to make the roster is Christian Jones. Before the season Jones was considered by some to be the most likely Seminole to go in the 1st round. His production did not match that, but he has loads of talent and is extremely versatile. Many teams will be disappointed that they passed on Christian when they see what he does for the Bears.

Summary: Swanson was a terrific pick in round 3. They reached on Van Noy though and its hard to justify a 1st round TE with the holes they had. This is a team that could have really benefited from trading down. I can't believe that they didn't address the secondary until a 4th round reach on Nevin Lawson. They got good value late with Jones and Reid who along with Swanson prevent this from being a bottom 5 draft.

The best signing by far for the Lions and one of the best signings of this period was Gabe Lynn. This guy is a playmaker at safety which is the Detroit Lions' biggest position of need. Out of any team's undrafted free agents this is as likely as any to make the team. Lynn will make the team and likely have an impact this season. The Lions are so thin at safety, that Justin Couplin has a great chance to make it as well. These guys were very smart to sign with Detroit. Detroit probably should have added another corner though just to see if they could find a diamond in the rough to help the weak secondary. Seasay has a good chance to make the roster for that reason.
Chad Abram has a decent chance to make it depending on how Caldwell wants to use the fullback. If he uses the fullback like he did in Baltimore, then Abram makes it. However, if it's more like the fullback use in Indy, Abram will be squeezed off the roster.

Getting a guy this polished in the 5^th round is a big score for Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers. The fan base has to be jacked that they keep this guy in state.

Summary: This draft was just the typical above average draft. Very slightly above average. Clinton-Diz will make an immediate impact. Adams was a slight reach, but will be quality. Thornton was picked in a good spot. Rogers, Linsley, and Bradford are good values for where they got selected. As discussed Abbrederis is a steal at the point he was selected. The last two picks have great upside for their spot in the draft, but don’t expect impacts from them. Not a bad draft at all, but nothing spectacular.

This is one of the most physical players in the draft and the new coaching staff is all about that. This guy is one the Vikings just have to be thrilled about. Mike Zimmer is happy with this pick.

Summary: I talked about how Zimmer was happy with Yankey, but he likely is happy with the entire draft. This is a very quality draft by the Vikings. You have Yankey in the 5th round and Exum in the 6th providing tremendous value. In the 3rd you get Scott Crichton who some had as a 1st rounder and Jerick McKinnon. McKinnon of course was the Georgia Southern RB who had the game-winning touchdown against the Florida Gators. Georgia Southern beat the Gators without throwing a pass, which kind of shows you what McKinnon can do (or that the Gators are just THAT bad). Anthony Barr is a phenomenal pick and instant starter. Bridgewater I am mixed on, but they got him at a good spot.

This is the biggest no-brainer in the draft about best draft pick. The Cowboys resisted the urge to do something crazy and picked one of the safest guys in the draft. Martin has the Notre Dame school record for starts and may be the only guy in this draft that can play anywhere on the offensive line. He's durable as he never missed a game and started all 52. This guy was also dominant in the Senior Bowl during the entire week. The Cowboys could not have done much better.

Summary: If you take the Martin pick out of it, I hate what the Cowboys did in this draft. Cowboys fans should be furious. When your own front office is questioning whether another team beat you in a draft trade, there is a problem. I do not think Demarcus Lawrence comes close to the value that they traded to get him (Kony Ealy and Trai Turner). In fact, I think that Ealy and Turner will both be better pros than Lawrence. That is likely why the Cowboys questioned their move. The Panthers made a huge move and the Cowboys have to be disappointed in the return. Devin Street was good value in the 5th though. Really the Cowboys got nobody that can make an impact on this team other than Martin. Lawrence or Street could be decent role players, but in the deepest draft in my lifetime they got to get more. Especially a team like the Cowboys who are in such horrible salary cap position. I bump them up slightly for passing on Manziel and getting quality, but this was not a good draft for Dallas. It would surely have been an F if Dallas had got their wish and Ryan Shazier been available. Martin has a better pro career in his future than Shazier.

Eli has to be thrilled with this pick. They get the best route runner in the draft and a guy that has sure hands. He's not as big as Benjamin or Evans and not as fast as Watkins, but a better route runner than all and as good with his hands. All 4 will be studs and the Giants have got to be thrilled to have one.

Summary: The Giants had a very solid draft. This draft had a lot of quality picks and players who can contribute. Andre Williams is a workhorse back that they got in the 4th round. Richburg, Bromley, and Berhe all fell to provide great value. This was one of the better drafts and just below the top group. Great job by the Giants. They got a top 10 draft on their hands.

Emmanuel Dieke is a guy I have seen play a lot the last three years and not once did he stand out or look impressive. He is an extreme longshot to make the roster. All the rest of these guys seem like longshots as well.

This guy was not anywhere close to the best player drafted in Round 1. However, the Eagles get extra picks in the process and he fits wonderfully in that defense. This pick is a win-win.

Summary: How they got Marcus Smith trading back and getting a great guy for their team is how it should be done. If you want a guy for your scheme take him when he holds value. Do not reach for a prospect. They got great value in Round 2 with Jordan Matthews as well. Jaylen Watkins will be a good special teams player and can develop into a solid nickel corner. I like a few guys in this draft, but no dominant players.

Trey Burton is a sleeper to contribute in this offense. Chip Kelly is an offensive genius and a guy as versatile as Burton could create several matchup problems. I say he makes the team and Kelly finds a creative way to utilize his talents.
Josh Andrews was a good depth move.
Henry Josey is a guy that I am still quite surprised he wasn't picked. This guy was one of the fastest runningbacks in the nation last year and ran rather effectively. Although he is a smaller back, he simply gets the job done.
Kevin Graf also has a great chance at earning a spot as does Donald Hawkins. Hawkins is a better fit at guard, but played tackle in college.
Keliikipi is probably the most likely of this group to find a roster spot. He has the Oregon connection to Kelly, but more importantly is the best player of this group.
Taylor Martinez is the guy who was once thought of as a serious Heisman contender that never lived up to the potential. He is getting a shot to play at the NFL Level for the Eagles, but not as a QB. Much like Eric Crouch before him, Martinez is getting a shot at WR and DB. This should be an interesting one to watch with this well known longshot.

Moses had a first round grade on many boards. While I had him going in the 2nd round, he had a 1st round grade for me as well. I had him rated higher than some guys who were actually taken in the 1st round also. This was a great pick for the Redskins who didn't have many. I thought Washington would take him in the 2nd, so to get him in the 3rd has got to make the team ecstatic.

Summary: This was another above average draft. I really liked this draft outside the last two picks. The Moses pick was fantastic as was the other ACC guy they got. Bashaud Breeland was a projected 2nd rounder who fell to the Skins in the 4th. This guy is better than the guy they got in the 2nd last year (Amerson). Spencer Long is a solid pick and Mayock thinks Washington will start him immediately. I wasn't as high on him, but Mayock usually knows his stuff. I thought he was drafted around where he should have been picked. Trent Murphy being available in the 2nd round had to be very exciting for the Skins as well. Murphy instantly helps the Redskins put pressure on the Quarterback. Lache Seastrunk in Round 6 is ridiculous as well. That guy is a burner and a great fit in Jay Gruden's offense. The 1-2 punch of Morris and Seastrunk will be great. Helu is not going to see nearly as many carries next year.

I love the Davenport signing. I say he sticks with the team and by doing so gives the Redskins much needed depth on the defensive line. Thomas could do the same, but I think Davenport is the better player.
Lawrence doesn't have the elite speed you look for in an NFL receiver, but he runs fantastic routes. He also is fearless across the middle and has good size. This guy is one that can make the team.
Silas Redd of course is the player who transferred to USC from Penn State following the scandal. However, in the new offense and tougher conference, Redd was not as successful. The fact that he was more successful against weaker teams and a weaker schedule should be somewhat alarming.
Bryan Shephard isn't very physical on the outside, but he could help and would be great on special teams.

Most people would go with Roby because of the fit for the Broncos defense. However, Roby has gotten destroyed against good competition in his career and I believe he will flop. Wisconsin tore Roby a new one in that game this past year. Therefore, I pick the one guy who I think will eventually be a starter.Picking Barrow in Round 5 is tremendous value as he is a guy that can start as a WILL linebacker in a 3-4 defense right now. The only problem with that is that the Broncos employ a 4-3 defense. Although he doesn't fit as well in the 4-3 he still holds great value in this round though. His speed is what sets him apart from some other at the position. This guy will be a quality player for a while.

Grade: D+

Summary: You'd like to get a few starters out of each draft. As I said, I don't see any quality starters for the future other than Barrow. Schofield could be as well, but I don't see it from the other guys. The one thing I will say is that the Broncos drafted positions of need which helps their grade to a D+. Otherwise, I would probably give this draft a D-. Not many impact players if any in the Broncos group. From a loaded draft, this club did not pick up much. Latimer was a major reach in my opinion. However, lucky for him he gets to play with Peyton Manning and get some very inflated stats because of it.

I love the Barrett pickup as Barrett definitely should have been drafted. Head-to-head against Alabama and Cyrus Kouandjo, Barrett picked up 1.5 sacks. He had 12 sacks on the season and is a very solid pass rusher. This was one of the better free agent pickups.
Bryn Renner has a lot of upside following his injury plagued 2014. He was considered by many to be the best QB in the ACC heading into the season.
I am a big fan of the Juwan Thompson pickup. He is a big back and the Broncos are small at this position. Thompson is a grinder and his 225 lb frame will do some damage in the Denver running game.
Louis Young is fast, but he can't tackle.
The other players are intriguing, but don't see any diamonds in the rough here.

Best Pick: De'Anthony Thomas

This is one of the biggest reasons I said that you can wait for a runningback in the draft. The Oregon Ducks got who I believe is the most pro ready runningback in round 4 of the draft. He is the perfect complement/backup to Jamal Charles. Drafting Thomas allows the Chiefs to not put as much wear and tear on Charles and should keep Charles healthy. After losing McCluster, this was a big deal that the Chiefs got Thomas. De'Anthony Thomas can do everything McCluster did, but a bit faster. He will instantly be one of the fastest runningbacks in the NFL. If you look at the data, 40 yard time only positively correlates with one position and that is runningback. Drafting the fastest runningback makes a lot of sense for Kansas City.

Grade: C-

Summary: I like the Thomas pick a lot, but the Chiefs reached in other parts of the draft. Dee Ford will be a productive player and while most say that was a reach, I am ok with that pick. Picking the developmental Gaines in Round 3 was a reach. Aaron Murray should have been a 7th rounder or undrafted and he got picked in the 5th. Fulton is another guy I wouldn't have drafted. Admittedly, I know nothing about the kid from Canada. I've seen zero film. However, Mayock seems to like the guy. If he hits as a 6th rounder it changes the outlook of this draft a lot.

Best Pick: Khalil Mack

Everyone expected the Raiders to be the Raiders and do something like draft Johnny Manziel. However, the Raiders did the smart thing and drafted the best player available on their board in the 1st round. Mike Mayock said he will certainly be an all-pro and he definitely has that potential. I wouldn't say its a lock, but there isn't a safer pick in this draft than Mack other than Jake Matthews. This was a very smart pick that fills a huge need. Mack could easily turn into the leader and cornerstone of this defense.

Grade: B-

Summary: The Mack pick was smart and at least they waited until Round 2 to pick a QB. That being said, I am not a big fan of the QBs in this draft and a team like the Raiders need help elsewhere. I personally would have gone wide receiver in round 2 as the Raiders desperately need help there and there were several options available. Derek Carr could be good, but I just don't see it happening. The Raiders already have 3 QBs better than Carr will ever be in my opinion. Matt McGloin, Terrell Pryor, and Matt Schaub are all better than Derek Carr. It is possible I am wrong, but they need a receiver more. Who are all these QBs going to throw to? James Jones was a good signing and helps a bit and Moore is a solid starter, but they don't have much beyond that. They could be counting on undrafted rookie Mike Davis in the slot. Other than the Carr pick, I love what the Raiders did. Gabe Jackson was great value in round 3 and I look for him to be an instant starter.

Mike Davis is the best of this group and he should have been drafted. Again, players like this not being picked is why Texas had nobody drafted. It wasn't for lack of quality. Davis has sub 4.5 speed and could develop into a quality slot receiver in the pros. I see him as a quality #3 for some team down the line. A better QB in college has this guy drafted in the 3rd round.
The other players are pretty good quality for undrafted free agents. Adding these guys for competition was a wise move.

Best Pick: Jeremiah Attaochu

The way the draft was falling the Chargers knew they had to move up in Round 2 to get Attaochu and they will be sure glad they did. I rarely like trading up, but it was smart in the Chargers case who want instant starters and to make a real run. Attaochu is one of the best 3-4 outside linebackers in this draft and he is a brilliant scheme fit for San Diego. He is a 1st round talent that is solid rushing the passer and defending the pass. Great pick for San Diego. Do not be surprised if Attaochu challenges Calvin Pryor for defensive rookie of the year.

Grade: B

Summary: The San Diego Chargers had an above average draft. Nothing really newsworthy besides the Attaochu selection, but they got solid players throughout. In Verrett and Attaochu they got two instant starters that help out a great deal. Much like the Raiders though they waited a bit too long to get a WR. This team could really use a good complement to Keenan Allen and Tevin Reese just doesn't cut it for me. Reese is fast, but I just don't see it. Their first three picks were more A- quality, but the talent they got on day 3 dropped them to a B. There is not much there for their day 3 picks.

It is hard to find a better group of undrafted free agents than what the Chargers pulled off. Every one of their signings can compete for a roster spot. The best signing was Iron Bowl hero Chris Davis as he will almost certainly make the team. Several other players are notable though. The tight end Michael Flacco is the younger brother of Ravens QB Joe. Ian White is incredibly versatile on the offensive line and has played a lot of guard and tackle in the past. Several others DBs that were signed are high quality. Nice job by San Diego here.

Best Pick: Louis Nix

To get a round 1 value at the second half of Round 3 is incredible. Yes, this draft was loaded, but this was probably the second best pick of the entire draft. The only pick I have better than this was the Jernigan pick. The Texans could no longer pass up the value that Nix provided in the 3rd Round. This team now has a loaded defensive line in their move to the 3-4. Fantastic pick of an impact player here.

Summary: The Texans were another team that had one of the best three drafts I thought. If the Ravens draft was #1 as I suggested than this one was 1a. I have this draft as very slightly behind the Ravens, but the Texans are the closest number 2 in draft history. This draft was incredible and every pick was a quality player right down to Mr. Irrelevant at 256. These guys all have a tremendous chance to make the team. To get the QB with perhaps the best arm talent in this draft on Day 3 is unbelievable. They plugged holes, they picked the best player available, they got their QB, and most importantly they got 3 players with round 1 talent. Absolutely fantastic draft for the Texans and right there with Baltimore in terms of quality.

McClung needs to get more physical, but I really like that pickup because Houston could use some WR depth. He can make it in this league if he gets stronger.
The Texans need some inside linebackers for their move to the 3-4 and Bullough gives them depth there. Most thought he'd be picked in the 4th or 5th round and doubted he'd be undrafted. This is one of the better pickups after the draft.
There isn't really a group of undrafted free agents that will impress you more coming in than this group. In addition to McClung and Bullough the Texans got a new kicker and several other guys that will compete for spots. With the draft and these undrafted FA signings the Texans next year will be much younger, improved and have a lot of roster turnover.

Indianapolis Colts

Best Pick: Donte Moncrief

Moncrief was the one pick I liked for the Colts. He was at one point projected as a 1st or 2nd round pick and he fell to the Colts in the 3rd Round. I always had him as a third rounder in this draft, but he was good value and can contribute to Indy. His leaping ability is awesome. The one combine test that correlates well to NFL production is the vertical jump and Moncrief jumped 39.5 inches. He also had the longest broad jump at the combine. An absolutely terrific athlete. The biggest reason Moncrief had a round 3 grade instead of higher is his route running. The route running must improve in the pros. He will make an impact in Indy, but probably not until year 2 because of his poor route running.

Summary: The Colts draft has to be graded on the entirety of their draft. This team managed to get only 5 players out of the deepest draft in 30 years. They managed to trade their 1st rounder for a guy who is now a backup RB. Trent Richardson is not a good investment of a 1st round pick. If a 1st rounder is used on a RB in today's NFL, he better be a starter. The Colts had good intentions trading for Richardson during the season, but they helped the Browns out tremendously. That move was the draft blunder of the year, eventhough it happened before the draft. Add in the fact that they didn't pick up one player that I project to make a major impact and I hate this draft. The only player I like in this class in Moncrief and he is not a good route runner. This was the worst draft out of all of the NFL teams.

I like the Hoover pickup. In a head-to-head matchup with the Buckeyes and Mewhort, Hoover was fantastic. This guy has a relentless motor and player incredibly well for Sparty last year.
I like that the Colts gave Eric Pike a shot, he really impressed me in the division 1AA playoffs and seems to be a solid run blocker.
Erik Swoope is another one of those basketball tight ends and should be interesting to watch. He has never played football and will be a project, buy a very intriguing one.
Other than that I don't see any of these guys making an NFL roster, other than maybe Parkey.

Telvin Smith was the leader of FSU's National Championship defense and very underrated going into this draft. Smith has incredible speed, tackling ability, and range. Some said this undersized linebacker should move to safety (similar to Derrick Brooks). While he isn't in Brooks' league, he is a tremendous talent, leader, and football player. He will be a solid football player for Jacksonville for years to come. In Round 5 he is an absolute steal. Coaching him in the Senior Bowl and seeing his ability there was a huge benefit for the Jaguars staff. This pick should really excite their fanbase. Jacksonville picks up a lot of new fans from FSU with the pick.

Summary: This is another draft right below the top 3. Every single pick here with the exception of 1 I really liked. The Jaguars got solid value and look like they are actually building a football team. Maybe they can make the NFL's worst division a little more competitive. They did a very good job. The one negative I will say about this draft is that I believe they reached a bit on Bortles. He was the best QB in this draft and he might be able to succeed, but I am not sold. That being said, eventually you have to take a shot on a QB. Jaguars fans have been waiting for the guy for long enough. Maybe this is when they finally get a quality signal caller.If Bortles hits this may end up being the top draft 5 years from now. Very good job by Jacksonville. Also, while selling tickets is always secondary to winning while picking a team (winning sells the best) this team picked up a lot more fans from within the state with this draft. Drafting two of UCF's most popular players and one of FSU's cannot hurt ticket sales or the popularity of the franchise.

The Jaguars group of undrafted free agents will all put up strong battles for spots on the roster and they will make it interesting. The only one I am pretty sure will not make it is Damian Copeland and he can certainly stick elsewhere if he is cut. I say he won't make it because this is the deepest the Jaguars have ever been at WR and I see them taking three rookies on the roster already. They will have the two guys they drafted in addition, to Allen Hurns. Since, he worked with the offensive coordinator already Hurns has a jump start on the other rookies in this offense. This also is a benefit for Stephen Morris who had his best season in college under the current Jaguars OC. Morris at one point coming into the season was mentioned as a possibility in Round 1. If he can be fixed it is here, and it was a brilliant move by Morris to sign with Jacksonville.
Tyler Shatley is the second strongest offensive lineman in this draft, behind only Russell Bodine. That strength has to count for something. He is raw as a player and played defense the majority of his time at Clemson, but could be quite good once he develops. Again, great group that will compete for spots.

Tennessee Titans

Best Pick: Taylor Lewan

I had every pick by the Titans graded at a lower spot than they were selected, besides Lewan. Taylor Lewan is one of the ten best players in this draft, so to get him at 11 had to be thrilling for Tennessee. He has great 1 on 1 blocking ability. Lewan will be the leader of this offensive line for years to come. He will block the blindside of whatever legitimate QB eventually comes in here. Btw, that is Lewan against top pick, Jadeavon Clowney. Lewan was pretty good against Clowney in the Outback Bowl if you check the whole tape and not just the one hit.

Summary: The Titans reached slightly on each pick (besides Lewan) in my opinion, but it wasn't terrible. They didn't absolutely blow their picks and people can compete for spots. Bishop Sankey and Taylor Lewan will start immediately and could help Tennessee win some games. Sankey was one of the best backs in this class, but I wouldn't have taken a back until round 3 this year. That is especially true for the Titans who have several other holes. Quality player though and not a reach by most people's standards.

I like that the Titans saw their deficiencies at wide receiver. While I am not a huge fan of the three guys they signed they recognized a need which is a step in the right direction. They also got a pretty good runningback for an undrafted free agent. The Titans should have signed my big boys on the offensive line as their o-line could still use some help. I like Ikard and McCray though for the depth they provide. James Gayle is the best player of this group. He should make the squad and be a good special teams player. Down the road, he could make an impact.
